10 Tips To Make Bottling Day Easier

Bottling your homebrew doesn’t have to be time consuming and difficult! Here's 10 tips to help make bottling day quicker and easier!

  1. Get organized before you begin. Have your equipment and ingredients ready to go.
  2. Sanitize your bottles the day before. Use a bottle tree or leave out to dry overnight. Don’t forget to sanitize the caps!
  3. Develop a buddy system. A buddy system will take a great amount of time off of bottling day. One fills while the other caps. Not only is it easier, it’s more sanitary.
  4. Use your Dishwasher. Just open your dishwasher door, set the bottles in the rack and fill the bottles over it. Any spill over will be caught right in the door for an easy clean up.
  5. Siphon your beer. Don’t bottle directly from the fermenter; siphon your beer off the fermenter and into a priming bucket or carboy when bottling. Minimize splashing as air can oxidize your beer.
  6. Use a Beer Priming Calculator and a scale. Accurately measure the quantity of the beer being carbonated, and the amount of sugar needed for proper carbonation. There are free calculators available online.
  7. Gently stir priming fluid into the beer to make sure it's evenly distributed.
  8. Reuse carriers and case boxes. This will make organization and storage easier.
  9. Store your beer in a cool, dark place. Dark bottles are best, however, if you are using clear or green bottles, it is especially important to make sure they are stored in a dark place.
  10. Clean up. Before you put any equipment away, you will want to make sure you clean and rinse it well. This will save a lot of time on the next bottling day.
